TikTok Beauty Routines May Trigger Skin Allergies in Teens: What You Need to Know

Table of Content

Social media beauty routines—especially TikTok’s “Get Ready With Me” (#GRWM) videos—are hugely popular with preteens and teens. But a recent study warns that these carefully curated skincare regimens may be too harsh for young, developing skin, potentially causing allergic reactions and long-term sensitivity.

Harsh Regimens Among Young Users

Northwestern Medicine researchers studied 100 TikTok videos targeted at young girls (ages 7–18) using undercover profiles posing as 13-year-olds. On average, these routines featured six skincare products—and some even exceeded twelve—at a cost of $168 to over $500 monthly.

Alarmingly, patch tests found most routines contained 11 active ingredients known to irritate skin or trigger allergies. Only 26% of videos mentioned sunscreen use—a troubling omission since many of these ingredients make skin more sun-sensitive.

Why Young Skin Is More Vulnerable

Children’s skin is thinner and less mature, making it especially prone to irritation. Harsh ingredients—like hydroxy acids—can disrupt this barrier, leading to allergic contact dermatitis and chronic sensitivity.

Pediatrician Dr. Daniel Ganjian explains that early exposure can lead to lifelong allergies when the immune system becomes sensitized.

Unrealistic Beauty Messaging

Many videos marketed “lighter, brighter skin,” perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards. One teen applied ten products in six minutes and experienced burning during the video—a reaction aired live.

These messages pressure young viewers to believe they need elaborate, expensive routines to look “healthy.”

Mental Health Impacts

The emotional toll includes body-image issues, low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression—fueled by the pursuit of perfection through cosmetic regimens.

Tips for Safe Skincare

  • Keep routines simple: gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF 30+.
  • Patch-test new products for 48 hours before full use.
  • Avoid strong actives unless prescribed by a dermatologist.
  • Choose fragrance-free, non-comedogenic formulas.
  • Seek professional guidance for persistent skin concerns.

“Sunscreen is the only product I regularly recommend for kids without specific skin concerns,” said Dr. Molly Hales.
